Atmospheric Conversion Widget

Galactic Horizon, with eyes on exploration and terraforming, created a series of terraforming widgets starting in YE 45, initiating with a device to convert toxic or otherwise unbreathable atmospheres into normal, breathable air by filtering out hazardous substances.

History

As part of a newer Terraforming initiative, ideas had been brought to the drawing board about creating devices which could automatically take care of different aspects of the Terraforming process. Work began on a series of devices, later named Widgets, which could perform these various tasks, either in a stationary, or even mobile capacity. As breathable air was deemed more important than most other concerns with Terraforming a planet, the Atmospheric Conversion Widget was designed first, becoming available in mid YE 45.

Description

A somewhat curious device, the Atmospheric Conversion Widget is essentially a Matter Collection System which has been modified to collect atmosphere, separate it into its components, and then discharge only those components required for a standard, breathable atmosphere. The unit's DAWN AI takes care of all the sorting and data crunching required by the widget, and allows it to operate autonomously if needed, or to link with other widgets as part of a system.

Intake

Utilizing an array of simple field projectors, the Atmospheric Conversion Widget draws in atmosphere, which is stored compressed in a receiver within the body of the widget. This compressed atmosphere is then subjected to various processes which cause the individual components to separate from one another, dividing by their density, electromagnetic attraction, or other properties as well as mechanical filtration in the case of certain elements which as capable of being separated thusly. Once separated or filtered, the chemicals, elements, or other substances may be either combined, broken down, or simply isolated, and stored in an array of tanks which are each designed to hold specific types of substances.

Discharge

Once the intake, separation, filtration, sorting, and storage are taken care of, the Atmospheric Conversion Widget then draws from its storage tanks only the compounds, gasses, and other elements required for a standard, breathable atmosphere, and combine them in a rough mixture that is safe for breathing. This gaseous mixture is constantly monitored, and adjusted to ensure that the output will create a usable, breathable atmosphere. The output can be either configured to simply vent into the surrounding air, or can be attached to some sort of duct work or ventilation system in a stationary use of the device, such as use to create filtered air for a facility, colony, or other structure.
